Scam Calls: Recognising the Red Flags

Staying safe from scam calls is more important than ever. At 1pMobile, we want to help you protect your personal information and avoid falling victim to fraudsters. Here's how to spot the warning signs and keep your guard up.

Common Red Flags of Scam Calls

  • Unexpected Contact: Calls from unknown numbers, especially those claiming urgent action is required.
  • Requests for Personal Details: Genuine organisations will never ask for your PIN, password, or full bank details over the phone.
  • Pressure Tactics: Scammers often create a sense of urgency or threaten consequences if you don't respond immediately.
  • Too Good to Be True Offers: Be wary of prizes, refunds, or deals that sound unrealistic.
  • Caller ID Spoofing: Fraudsters can make their number look like it's from a trusted company or local area code.

Hints & Tips to Stay Protected

  • Don't Share Personal Info: Never give out sensitive information unless you're certain of the caller's identity.
  • Hang Up and Verify: If in doubt, hang up and call back using the official number from the company's website.
  • Block & Report: Use your phone's settings to block suspicious numbers and report them to your provider.
  • Stay Calm: Don't let high-pressure tactics rush your decision. Take your time and ask questions.
  • Educate Family: Share these tips with family members, especially those who may be more vulnerable.

What to Do If You Suspect a Scam

  • End the Call: Trust your instincts and hang up if something feels off.
  • Contact Your Bank: If you've shared financial information, inform your bank immediately.
  • Report the Scam: Report suspicious calls to Action Fraud (www.actionfraud.police.uk) and your mobile provider.

Be careful - even "innocent" surveys can be used by scammers

Some scam calls don't look suspicious at all. The caller may say they are conducting a simple lifestyle survey and start asking harmless-sounding questions such as:

  • What washing machine do you use?
  • Which washing detergent do you usually buy?
  • How old are your appliances?
  • How satisfied are you with your home equipment?

It may sound like normal market research. But sometimes the goal is to collect information about you and your household.

A few weeks or months later you might receive another call from a different number. The caller already knows details about your appliances and may say something like:
"Your washing machine warranty is about to expire…"
"We're calling regarding the appliance you told us about…"
Because they already know specific information, the call can sound much more believable.

This is why it's best to be careful with unexpected phone surveys. If you didn't sign up for research, you don't have to answer questions about your home, purchases or personal habits.

A good rule: If someone you don't know calls asking detailed questions about your home, products you use or your lifestyle - you can simply end the call.

And please warn older family members as well. Scammers often target seniors with these types of calls because they are more likely to politely answer survey questions.
